The Inexcusable Comparison of the Heroin Addict and the Cultural Junkie
Why is it the worst thing in the world to want to travel, play music and write for your life? True, you might not make much money. But what the hell is money? If you don't care, why do other people? You tell someone you plan on doing those things and they act as if you're talking about a made-up land. "Impractical life choices" become the equivalent of taking up a heroin addiction.
God forbid you say you want to be WRITER. You must have a million other jobs to provide for yourself. Well, that all depends on how you want to live, what your standards are. Most writers don't really have standards. Seriously, if an author were to have a million other jobs how the hell would the book be written? A good number of writers actually just write. Crazy, huh? Are you going to go tell the likes of Bukowski or Ayn Rand or Margaret Atwood that they haven't done/didn't do anything with their lives because they're JUST writers? Should we not appreciate the people sacrificing a "lifestyle" for creative purposes? And for giving us the amazing literature they have, enlightening us in ways we couldn't have imagined?
Next time someone asks me what I'm doing with my life I'm going to say I plan on being a lawyer or doctor, getting married, having kids and retiring, you know, so they can breathe for two seconds and not have a heart attack over what I plan on doing with MY life.

Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky wrote in his novel Crime and Punishment,
"Would you believe, they insist on complete absence of individualism and that's just what they relish! Not to be themselves, to be as unlike themselves as they can. That's what they regard as the highest point of progress".
